Bioethanol Production from Agricultural Wastes for Waste Minimization and Carbon Budget Analysis

Year: 2011 – 2015

Institution: TUBITAK 1001 Projects

Status: Completed

Within the scope of Türkiye’s European Union harmonization process, this study aimed at the laboratory-scale production of renewable biofuel (bioethanol) for the transportation sector using selected agricultural residues with high energy content (wheat straw and corn stover) that cannot be properly disposed of in Türkiye. Laboratory-scale bioethanol production was carried out through enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation using the selected agricultural residues, applying different enzymes and pre-treatment methods, and the process efficiency was evaluated. The produced fuel ethanol was characterized according to the EN 15376 standard to determine its suitability for use in the transportation sector.
