This project applied a life cycle management approach to achieve integrated waste reduction and energy savings for a specific region in Türkiye. Within the scope of the study, environmental and economic assessments were conducted for a pilot-scale anaerobic digestion and biogas recovery facility established in Türkiye. The environmental assessment was carried out based on impact categories such as global warming, acidification, aquatic and terrestrial eutrophication, photochemical ozone formation (effects on vegetation), and stratospheric ozone depletion. From a broader perspective, energy production scenarios were evaluated within expanded system boundaries, comparing multiple alternatives. The results indicated that, in the absence of utilizing animal and plant-based wastes in anaerobic digestion and biogas production systems, even some renewable energy options may exhibit higher environmental impacts.
